BATTLE of ADWA
Africa's history is full of European conquest over African resistance. In 1896 however, Ethiopian forces defeated Italian forces at the battle of Adwa. The Ethiopian victory threw off Italian colonial ambitions and became a symbol of resistance to Africans and others around the world.

In the fall of 1884, leaders of European countries with colonial designs on Africa met in Berlin to lay the groundwork for the peaceful colonization of Africa. Some rules included the ncessity of establishing a treaty with the local chiefs and to have Europeans on the ground.
The period following the Berlin Conference was a disater for Africa-- its people and its environment.
