Africa is known to many for the conflicts that rage across the continent. Unrest seems common among the diverse peoples of it's countries.

 

The people of most African countries are still working out a legacy of colonial rule, in which European nations ruled their lands for many years and created arbitrary. . .

WHY GO TO WAR?

The Nigerian artist El Anatsui uses bottlecaps to explore the link between Europe, Africa and the United States and to examine the meaning of walls-- to separate, to protect, to deprive of freedom.

In these scenes from the 1986 film O Heroi (The Hero), we see the human cost of 40 years of conflict in Angola. The characters in the film are attempting to rebuild their lives despite the many hardships wrought by conflict.

WAR and IDENTITY

The novel Terra Sonambula, (Sleepwalking Land) by Mozambiquan writer Mia Couti tells the story of Mozambique's birth as an independent country and the conflict that defined this moment.
