For seven years in the 1990s, the feminist punk rock band Bikini Kill from Olympia, Washinton and Washinton D.C. fostered a DIY ethic and girl solidarity.  The band is often credited with instigating the Riot Grrrl movement, and encouraging young girls to start bands and change the world.
