The film Whale Rider tells the story of Paikea, a young girl living in New Zealand.  Among the Ngāati Porou, a Māori tribe, traditions are dying and the tribe is in need of a new leader.  Although she seeems destined to lead her people, Paikea, is overlooked by her grandfather, Koro.
